220 mm of cut from a 127 kg bandsaw

The HOLZMANN HBS400 is the entry machine in HOLZMANN’s floor-standing bandsaw range: 220 mm cutting height at 90°, 240 mm of cutting width at the parallel fence, 380 mm of throat and a 2950 mm blade on 400 mm wheels. At 127 kg net the HBS400 is a real cast-and-steel machine rather than a benchtop saw, but it is still light enough to move on a pallet truck and to fit a small joinery or a cabinet shop with limited floor area.

Cast-iron wheels are the reason it runs true

Cut quality on the HBS400 rests on mass in the right places. The HBS400 uses cast-iron flywheels with a rubber-coated surface, which store enough momentum to carry the blade through a knot and protect the blade set, and a massive sheet metal construction that resists flexing under tension. The 500 x 400 mm table sits at 990 mm – the highest table in this bandsaw group – and tilts 0° to 45° for bevelled cuts.

Fence and blade range

The aluminium fence guide on the HBS400 is adjusted by handwheel and gear rack and carries a scale with a fast-lock system, so repeat rips are set by reading rather than by measuring the cut. Blade width runs from 6 mm to 20 mm, which covers curve cutting and light ripping; the HBS400 is not intended for wide resaw blades. A single Ø100 mm port serves extraction, and a compact collector such as the ABS850 at 850 m³/h is a sensible match.

Choosing the HBS400

The HBS400 is driven by a 1500 W S6 (1100 W S1) motor and comes in 230V and 400V versions, so it installs on a domestic supply. If the shop regularly resaws boards deeper than 220 mm, the HBS470PROFI or HBS610 is the correct machine and the HBS400 will frustrate; within its capacity the HBS400 is the cheapest route into a proper floor-standing bandsaw.
