Which type of sander do I need - belt and disc, oscillating, or drum?

Choose the sander family from the surface you are sanding. A benchtop belt-and-disc machine (BT, TS305, TSM250) trues small parts held by hand. An oscillating edge belt sander (KOS) sands long edges and gentle curves on frames and panels. An oscillating spindle sander (OSS, OBS100A) reaches internal curves and cut-outs. A drum calibrating sander (ZS) brings a glued-up panel to uniform thickness. Most furniture workshops end up with a bench machine plus one of the larger types.

How do I choose the right sanding width on a ZS drum sander?

Set the sanding width of a drum sander from the widest panel you glue up, because anything wider has to be turned and passed twice with an overlap. The ZS400U covers 400 mm, the ZS560U and ZS560FU 560 mm, the ZS635NEO 630 mm, the ZS640P 640 mm and the ZS970P 970 mm. Check thickness capacity at the same time: the ZS560U stops at 80 mm, while the ZS400U takes 130 mm, the ZS640P 127 mm and the ZS970P 304 mm.

Which sanders run on 230 V single-phase power?

Most of the smaller sanders in this category run on 230 V single-phase. The BT bench machines, the TS305, the TSM250, the PSM2, the PSM3, the ZS400U, the ZS560U and the ZS560FU are single-phase, and the KOS2510N and ZS640P are catalogued in both 230 V and 400 V. The KOS2600C, the KOS3000C, the OSS200 and the ZS635NEO need a 400 V three-phase supply. Confirm the supply at the machine position before the quotation is prepared.

How much space and what dust extraction do sanders need?

Sanders need extraction more than any other woodworking machine, because sanding produces fine respirable dust rather than chips. Size the extractor to serve every port you intend to run at once - the TSM250 has a 35 mm port, the TS305 a 53 mm port, and the KOS3000C a double collection system feeding both the sanding unit and the table. For floor space, edge belt sanders need clear room on both sides for the full length of the workpiece, and drum sanders need infeed and outfeed room equal to the longest panel.

What do I have to budget for besides the sander itself?

Abrasives are the main ongoing cost of any sander and are not part of the machine. Budget belts, discs and spindle sleeves in at least two grits, plus spares, from the start: the ZS635NEO arrives with K80 and K100 belts fitted and the OSS75A with six K80 sleeves from 15 to 78 mm, but those are starting sets. Also budget the extractor, ducting and hose, and a stand or bench for the smaller machines.

What makes one sander cost more than another?

The price of a sander is driven by configuration and duty rather than by brand: sanding width and thickness capacity, one drum or two, continuous S1 motor rating against intermittent S6, cast iron tables and heavier frames, and refinements such as the independent oscillation motor on the KOS2600C or the frequency-controlled drum speed on the ZS560FU. The abrasive package, the extraction equipment specified alongside, delivery to your site and installation also form part of the quotation.
